Govanhaus: Community (Re(integration))

This architectural project embodies a holistic approach to addressing unemployment and fostering community cohesion.

The building consists of three interconnected structures arranged in the shape of an inverted triangle, surrounding a central public garden. The aesthetic embraces exposed materials like brick and concrete, creating a raw and authentic atmosphere.

Through the thoughtful incorporation of elements like screen walls and roofs, the design plays with natural light and shadow, resulting in dynamic patterns that shift throughout the day and year. Extensive sun studies and research on daylight entry informed these design choices, ensuring an optimal interplay between the building’s interior and the ever-changing outdoor environment.

Within this transformative space, the project unfolds in stages, each with a distinct purpose. The Library Building serves as the initial stage, providing study rooms and a comprehensive library to equip users with theoretical knowledge in their chosen field. The Workshop Building follows, offering practical application opportunities for users to solidify their skills through hands-on experience. Finally, the Gallery and Market Building becomes a platform for users to showcase their crafts and generate income.

Beyond its functional purpose, this architectural endeavor transcends the conventional community center. It becomes a space where people gather, form connections, and share a common goal. The culmination of the project is a festival that brings the neighborhood together to celebrate the achievements and creations of the users. Through thoughtful design and purposeful spaces, this architectural project aims to inspire and transform lives, fostering skill development, community engagement, and collective celebration.
